Information for African families
More than 50 African community leaders attended an African Families Forum organised by Multicultural S.A. to share information about the role of government agencies in supporting families.
The Forum was a follow-up to one of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission’s regular consultations. African community leaders highlighted the challenges community members face in raising families in Australia and the significance of the actions of government agencies on family and cultural integrity. Leaders were concerned about the uncertain consequences of using physical punishment to discipline children, and about the impact on family life of Centrelink payments to young people. In response, Multicultural S.A. organised senior officers from Families SA, Centrelink, and the Department of Housing, Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) to attend the Forum. The meeting gave community leaders a chance to: tell senior government officers about the concerns or uncertainties that exist; get clear information about the agencies’ policies and practices; and discuss how government agencies can effectively support African families in culturally appropriate ways. Multicultural S.A. undertook to provide information and links from the various government agencies on the www.multicultural.sa.gov.au website.
