Young migrants will be offered mentoring and network opportunities as a result of Multicultural S.A’s forum for culturally and linguistically diverse youth.
More than 40 young people from Sudan, Burma and Afghanistan attended a Youth Week Multicultural Breakfast in mid-April organised by Multicultural S.A. on the advice of the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission (SAMEAC).
The Committee is comprised of seven young people from Filipino, Greek, Italian, Jewish, Lebanese, Sierra Leonean and Vietnamese backgrounds, and is convened by SAMEAC Member Michelle Dieu.
Speakers included Youth Advisory Committee member Sidique Bah, from Sierra Leone, Akoi Guong from Sudan and Sharifa Haidari from Afghanistan.
In his speech, Akoi suggested that mentoring be offered to new arrival youth ‘at risk’ of unemployment, homelessness, isolation and other social problems.
