Vikram retired from the Indian Army as a Major General in 2006 into a senior management position with a well known Indian Corporate. He gave up his new career following his marriage to an Australian national of Indian origin, settling in Adelaide in March 2007.
Vikram served as an Infantry Officer with the elite Gurkha Regiment for 37 years after four years of training as an officer cadet. More than half of his service has been in combat and operational environment. He was twice decorated by the President of India with Vishist Seva Medal in 2000 and 2006 for services of distinguished order. His company, battalion, brigade and divisional commands have all been in operational areas bordering China and Pakistan.
In the latter part of his service (2003-2006) he was Deputy Master General of Ordnance, responsible for the project management and maintenance of Indian Army material including uniforms, equipments, arms and munitions and vehicles of all types. Upon retirement from the Army, he assumed a role as Vice President Corporate Affairs and Business Development with a multinational company, before moving to Australia.
Vikram has a post-graduate degree in Defence & Strategic Studies, a post-graduate degree in Management and Master of Philosophy in International Relations and Strategic Studies. He speaks English, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepalese fluently.
He is the immediate past President of the Indian Australian Association of South Australia.
Vikram also owns and runs a consultancy company primarily dealing in Strategic Defence, Security issues and business development in the sub continent and the gulf region. He is a Senior Advisor to a South Australia based International Consulting Company providing strategic security, counter terrorism and counter insurgency consultation and training. Vikram is also on the Committee of South Australia chapter of International Red Cross and International Humanitarian Law.
His interests include researching Islamic Militancy, writing for military journals and speaking on strategic and security issues in military and non military forums in Australia. He is a golf addict and trekking in Nepal, the home of the Gurkhas, is his other passion.
He is married to Veena, a secondary school science teacher. They have four children: two sons in India, an IT professional and a Marine engineer and two daughters in Adelaide, a doctor training to be an ophthalmologist and married to a GP and a younger girl in the Medical School of Adelaide University.
