African community elder Mariano Ngor migrated to Australia from Sudan as a refugee student, in 1984.

At the time he fled Sudan, Mariano was a Liaison Officer working on United Nations Integrated Rural

Development Projects in the Sudan.

In 2000 he became a Bilingual School Services Officer with the Department of Education and Children’s Services (DECS) specialising in the two languages Sudanese Arabic and Dinka. He has been a DECS Community Liaison Officer with the African communities since 2005.

Mariano is Chairperson of the Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Association; Chair of the Board of Sudanese Ethnic Schools of S.A. Inc.; Chair of the Sudanese Housing Committee and Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (S.P.L.M.) representative and spokesperson in Australia and Oceania.

S.P.L.M. is one of the two major partners in the Government of National Unity in the Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, established after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005.
