Assistance is given to apply for an Australian Lutheran World Service interest free loan for airfares. For those on low incomes who meet the criteria, as assessed by the LCC financial counsellor. Run by Lutheran Community Care.

Legal advice on migration

The Legal Services Commission of South Australia offers a wide variety of immigration and refugee legal advice and assistance, primarily through its Adelaide Office. Staff can provide free migration information and advice to anyone in South Australia, and they can also help people with visa applications if they cannot afford to pay a migration agent and are disadvantaged. Tel: +61 8 8111 5555. It also has a Free Legal Helpline available across South Australia via 1300 366 424.

Migration services

Registered migration agents offer general advice and assistance about migration, proposing or sponsoring family members to settle in Australia, visa applications, visa categories and conditions, appeals and citizenship. This service is available for all community members. Most humanitarian entrants and migrants with a Centrelink healthcare card are entitled to a free appointment. Run by the Australian Migrant Resource Centre of South Australia.

Subject to a merit and disadvantage test, the Legal Services Commission may be able to help people with visa applications who:

  • are in Australia and want to apply for permanent residence
  • want to sponsor partners and other family members to migrate to Australia
  • were sponsored by their partner and the relationship has ended for reasons including domestic violence
  • have been told their visa may be cancelled on character grounds, or
  • are in detention and have been referred to us by DIAC because they are seeking asylum

The Commission will provide interpreters for those clients who require them.
