Multicultural SA is responsible for ensuring that people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds receive equitable access to state government services.
Access essentially refers to the fact that government services should be available to everyone who is entitled to them regardless of where they live, and should be free of any form of discrimination on the basis of birthplace, language, culture, race or religion.
Equity means that government services should be delivered on the basis of fair treatment to clients who are eligible to receive them.
Access and Equity Initiatives
Under the South Australian Government's Performance Reporting Framework, government agencies are required to ensure that policies and practices include strategies to improve services for clients of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It also requires agencies to examine their consultation practices with diverse communities and how to improve them.
Other requirements covered in the Framework are the effective usage of ethnic media, provision of culturally appropriate services and linguistically appropriate information, and the cross-cultural training of staff to improve service delivery.
