The South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission - itself a good example of how a board can achieve gender equity and a mix of cultural backgrounds among its members - has a strong commitment to supporting training of women for nomination to boards and committees.
One of its most successful programs for achieving this goal is its Women’s Leadership Courses. To date, five courses have been conducted - four in the metropolitan area and one in a region. The courses are jointly funded by TAFESA Workplace Education, Multicultural S.A. and the Office for Women, so they can be provided free to participants. Graduates receive a Certificate III in Business Frontline Management.
The next course is not scheduled to begin until mid-2009 at the earliest. However, interested women are invited to provide an Expression of Interest Form to Multicultural S.A., to be kept on file for when the next course is announced. Multicultural S.A. will then write direct to applicants to find out if they are still interested in applying. Submission of an application does not guarantee a place in the course.

Multicultural SA is also in the process of organising the first Women's Advanced Leaderships Skills Retreat. This three-day residential training event will enable some of the women who have participated in a Women's Leadership Course, or have shown suitable leadership qualities, to further develop their skills to equip them for appointment to high-level boards and committees.
